Perissa offers one of the best beaches in Santorini…

Perissa
PERISSA

This Perissa Page is from the Simply Santorini website – an insiders guide to getting the most from Thira - the honeymoon island. Santorini hotels, resorts, romantic locations, beaches, history, sunsets & much more…

Perissa is a brilliant and popular holiday resort on Santorini, the prettiest of the Greek islands.

It is the perfect setting for a relaxing beach holiday with lots of choice of accommodation, places to eat and nightlife.

Beach Life

One of the Best Beaches in Santorini
ONE OF THE BEST BEACHES IN SANTORINI
The black sandy beach of Perissa stretches for miles and merges with Perivolos beach. It has to be one of the best beaches in Santorini. The beach has been awarded a Blue Flag because of its cleanliness and amenities. The water is sparkling crystal clear and contrasts well with the blackness of the sand. The volcanic sand can get extremely hot at the height of the summer so don't forget to wear flip flops or beach shoes.

With a backdrop of the magnificent mountain of Mesa Vouno that towers above the village of Perissa it is a spectacular beach setting.

There are plenty of rows of neat sun beds with parasols for hire to stretch out and enjoy the beach life. There's a diving school, watersports and a water park for the energetic too.

Where to Stay

There is plenty of choice of accommodation to choose from in Perissa ranging from a camping site right through to luxury hotels, with everything in between.

The camping site is at the beach and has tents under the shade of trees. It’s a perfect location for a camping holiday and for those on a budget.

Nine Muses Hotel
NINE MUSES HOTEL
The Nine Muses Luxury Hotel on the other hand offers a taste of luxury and boasts of its swimming pool with underwater music!

Along with the luxury hotels there are plenty of self catering accommodation in Perissa to suit all budgets and tastes.

Sightseeing

Don't forget to visit one of the nearby Santorini Wineries for wine tasting and picking up some bargains. You can find Boutari Winery at nearby Megolochori.

It’s an impressive winery in a lovely setting and a great place to taste the best Santorini wines.

You'll also find in the central square of Perissa the largest church of the island of Santorini. The gorgeous blue domed, white washed church of Timios Stavros has its feast day and festival on the 14th of September. This is when the village locals have a feast with plenty of delicious food and Santorini wine, traditional Greek dancing and music. Visitors are made very welcome. For more on the feast days, festivals and Santorini churches see our Saintly Santorini pages.

Also in the central square of Perissa you'll find the fascinating Mineral and Fossils Museum belonging to the Cultural Association of Thira. Well worth a visit.

You can get to the nearby ruins of Ancient Thira dating back to the 9th century BC. via a rugged path crossing the mountain of Meso Vouna.

Amongst the stone ruins at the top of the mountain are an impressive amphitheatre, temples, gymnasium and other ancient buildings and a Sanctuary dedicated to the Greek hero of the Trojan War, Achilles. In 2002 a chalice of the Ionic period was found amongst the stone ruins of ancient Thira. The chalice was engraved with both the craftsman's name and that of Achilles, great warrior of Homers Iliad. You can see many of the excavated artefacts on display at Archaeological Museum of Santorini at Fira.

For top tips about exploring Fira and the island of Santorini see our Getting around Santorini section featuring scooter hire and car rental.

Wining, Dining & Nightlife

There are plenty of choices of great places to eat in Perissa. Fish restaurants, traditional Tavernas and café bars line the black sandy beach. You will be spoilt for choice.

Fish Dish
FISH DISH
Try scrumptious stuffed tomatoes at the Ancient Thira Restaurant with a jug of local Santorini wine. Wonderfully tasty and good value for money too.

Or try the Lava Taverna for traditional Greek cuisine where you enter the kitchen to choose the fresh fish you want and have it cooked to your liking. Try the fish with an Ouzo and ice -delicious.

Another fabulous eatery in Perissa is the Kalimera. Try the tender; melt in the mouth beef Stifado washed down with a glass or two of Santorini wine.

As the sunsets over Perissa and the lights shine on the Meso Vouna a lively atmosphere descends over the village as it is transformed into a Santorini hotspot with cocktail bars, clubs and discos enticing visitors to enjoy the lively nightlife.

The Olive Tree Bar is very relaxing and perfect for a nightcap.

Taboo Bar

It boasts of its popularity and claims the secret to its success is "the rule of the Taboo bar is none leaves displeased." With the latest music, great drinks and friendly and sexy bar staff you shouldn't leave displeased either!
